CAMBRÉSIS - SIEGE OF CAMBRAI

(1581)

In 1581, the Prince of Parma, governor of the Netherlands, succeeded in taking Cambrai after a long siege. The Duke of Alençon entered Cambrai on August 17, 1581 and distributed "a good number of gold and silver triangular medals"; the Prince of Parma retired to Valenciennes. On August 20, 1581, the Duke of Alençon solemnly received in the cathedral of Cambrai the title of protector of the city. On June 10, 1584, Henry III inherited his brother's rights to Cambrai.
