Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-1994) est le 37e président des États-Unis d’Amérique de 1969 à 1974. Issu d’une famille pauvre de quakers, Richard Nixon fait des études de droit en Californie. Après avoir servi dans le Marine pendant la guerre, le jeune avocat est élu représentant de la Californie en 1946. En 1950, il devient sénateur, se distinguant pour son anticommunisme virulent. En 1952, il est choisi comme colistier de Dwight D. Eisenhower et à l’élection de ce dernier devient vice-président à seulement 39 ans. Candidat aux élections de 1960, il est battu par John F. Kennedy. Il ne se représente pas en 1964 et soutient Barry Goldwater qui est battu. En 1968, il bat le candidat démocrate Hubert Humphrey. Après une période d’escale dans la Guerre du Viêt-nam, il permet le désengagement militaire américain. Toujours au niveau international, il ouvre une période de détente avec le dirigeant soviétique Léonid Brejnev. Il rétablit des relations avec la République Populaire de Chine. Largement réélu en 1972, il est rattrapé par une série de scandales qui touche d’abord son vice-président Spiro Agnew forcé de démissionné suite à des accusations d’évasion fiscale et de corruption. En 1974, le scandale du Watergate éclate et met en lumière les activités clandestines et souvent illégales des membres de l'administration Nixon. Menacé de destitution, il démissionne le 9 août 1974 et est remplacé par son second vice-président Gerald Ford.
