Tant pour Gordien que pour Caracalla, la couronne radiée ne semble en aucun cas indiquer une différence de valeur libératoire entre les bustes radiés et laurés. On aurait pourtant pu le penser, d’autant plus que Gordien III frappe à Antioche des antoniniens radiés à valeur double du denier sur le modèle de l’atelier de Rome. L’observation des poids moyens, sauf qu’ils indiquent dans les deux cas des émissions fiduciaires (les variations de poids sont telles qu’il est impensable que la valeur de la pièce ait eu un lien précis avec son contenu métallique) n’indiquent absolument aucune différence.
Ceci pose une fois de plus le problème des valeurs relatives des tétradrachmes, deniers et antoniniens et de leur taux de conversion.
Les frappes du deuxième consulat avec le SC à l’exergue sont particulièrement rares et l’on a pu penser qu’elles avaient été interrompues par un grave revers militaire, obligeant à la fermeture temporaire de l’atelier. Il est exact que la stratégie particulière des Sassanides (assise sur le cheval et la mobilité extrême) en faisait de redoutables combattants en choc frontal mais de mauvais assiégeants et des administrateurs de ville occupée encore plus médiocres. Ils auraient donc pu prendre la ville après avoir défait devant les faubourgs une garnison romaine pour faire retraite ensuite. Cette hypothèse semble actuellement abandonnée, aucun autre indice historique d’une chute d’Antioche n’étant confirmée.
L’aigle du revers, dans cette première émission est un aigle d’Antioche usuel mais le Delta Eta des dernières émissions des Sévères a disparu, pour être remplacé par un SC à première vue incongru, qui est pourtant la meilleure raison que nous avons d’expliquer le Delta Eta comme équivalent à SC.
Si nous savons que l’institution existait, nos connaissances sur le Sénat d’Antioche et ses pouvoirs politiques ou symboliques sont extrêmement limitées pour cette période. Il faut donc déduire de cette légende des monnaies qu’il approuvait les émissions monétaires en argent et le faisait savoir.

Dans la base TSP maintenue par Michel Prieur, dix-huit exemplaires sont maintenant répertoriés. Le seul musée où un exemplaire est en collection est le British Museum (2 ex.).
For both Gordian and Caracalla, the radiate crown does not seem to indicate in any way a difference in the liberatory value between the radiate and laureate busts.. One might have thought so, especially since Gordian III struck in Antioch antoninians with a value double that of the denarius, based on the model of the Roman mint.. The observation of the average weights, except that they indicate in both cases fiduciary issues (the variations in weight are such that it is unthinkable that the value of the coin had a precise link with its metallic content) indicate absolutely no difference.
This once again raises the problem of the relative values of tetradrachms, denarii and antoninianus and their conversion rate..
The strikes of the second consulate with the SC in the exergue are particularly rare and it was thought that they had been interrupted by a serious military setback, forcing the temporary closure of the workshop. It is true that the particular strategy of the Sassanids (sitting on horseback and extreme mobility) made them formidable fighters in frontal clashes but poor besiegers and even more mediocre administrators of occupied cities.. They could therefore have taken the city after defeating a Roman garrison in front of the suburbs and then retreating.. This hypothesis currently seems to be abandoned, as no other historical evidence of a fall of Antioch has been confirmed..
The eagle on the reverse, in this first issue, is a usual Antiochian eagle, but the Delta Eta of the last Severan issues has disappeared, to be replaced by a SC which at first sight seems incongruous, which is nevertheless the best reason we have to explain the Delta Eta as equivalent to SC.
