Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was an English writer, poet, and navigator. He explored the American coasts from Florida to North Carolina and took possession of a land he named Virginia on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Under James I, he fell into disgrace. After an expedition to Guiana, he returned to England and was accused of conspiracy. He was condemned and beheaded.
