Cette pièce est l'une des deux monnaies de 5 lires frappées par le Gouvernement provisoire de la République Vénitienne de 1848. Celle-ci porte la date de création de cette éphémère république, 22 mars 1848, tandis que la seconde porte la date du 11 août 1848, fin de cette république. La frappe de la première a été autorisée par le décret du 29 juin 1848 et celle de la seconde par celui du 27 novembre 1848.

The Napoleonic conquests and the war against Austria put an end to the Republic of Venice: on May 12, 1797, Napoleon obtained the surrender of the Venetian government and, at the Treaty of Campo-Formio, France abandoned Venice to Austria, which it will occupy until 1866, even if in 1848 will be created an ephemeral republic (from March to August 1848) under the aegis of Daniel Manin.
