Les émissions de Nerva, limitées compte tenu de son court règne, à deux années, la seconde particulièrement rare, suivent le schéma déjà constaté pour Vespasien et Domitien mais seulement pour les revers. Au droit, c’est l’égide nouvelle qui est utilisée et non l’égide ancienne à la peau de chèvre et au serpent. Pour les revers, on revient après la révolution des deux dernières années de Domitien, à la représentation classique des premières frappes de chaque règne, les frappes de Néron des années 62/63.
La représentation de l’égide est d’un détail admirable, à décourager n’importe quel faussaire ; on remarque aussi sur la nuque une zone en pointillé qui lui correspond. Il est plus que probable que le graveur du portrait n’est pas celui de l’aigle du revers, très laborieux, ni d’ailleurs le graveur des légendes.
En effet, le lettrage est identique au droit et au revers, assez malhabile et sans génie, son auteur est certainement le graveur du revers, même pour la légende du droit.
Le portrait est d’une qualité exceptionnelle, certainement le plus beau portrait de Nerva, en grand format et en argent, de toute la numismatique romaine.
Dans la base TSP cent soixante dix-huit exemplaires sont maintenant répertoriés, dont dans les musées, British Museum (3), Paris (5), Berlin (2 ?), Oxford, Copenhague, Yale, ANS (4) et Fitzwilliam Collection Mc Lean.
Nerva's issues, limited given his short reign to two years, the second particularly rare, follow the pattern already observed for Vespasian and Domitian but only for the reverses. In law, it is the new aegis that is used and not the old aegis with the goat skin and the snake.. For the reverses, we return after the revolution of the last two years of Domitian, to the classic representation of the first strikes of each reign, the strikes of Nero of the years 62/63.
The representation of the aegis is of admirable detail, enough to discourage any forger; we also notice on the nape of the neck a dotted area which corresponds to it. It is more than likely that the engraver of the portrait is not the same as the engraver of the eagle on the reverse, which is very laborious, nor indeed the engraver of the legends..
In fact, the lettering is identical on the obverse and reverse, rather clumsy and without genius, its author is certainly the engraver of the reverse, even for the legend on the obverse.
The portrait is of exceptional quality, certainly the finest portrait of Nerva, in large format and in silver, in all of Roman numismatics..
