Rodez is a two-thousand-year-old city: its existence dates back to the 5th century BC. J.-C., when a Celtic people from central Europe, the Rutenes, stopped in the south of Auvergne to found one of these oppida characteristic of the Gallic civilization, that of Segodunum. Many heritage elements testify to the Romanization of Segodunum. While Christianity spread in the wake of the evangelizing action of Saint Amans, the city did not escape the troubles of the barbaric times which followed the fall of the Roman Empire.
