The age of Trajan (98-117 AD) represents one of the high points in the history of the Roman Empire, a period of territorial expansion, political stability and extraordinary cultural vitality. The figure of the princeps optimus, already celebrated by his contemporaries as a model of civil and military virtue, finds in his
coinage a direct testimony to the ideological complexity and effective use of imperial communication.
Trajan's coins, produced with remarkable care and exceptional variety, constitute a privileged document for the study of the figurative and propagandistic language of the imperial age. They reflect not only the salient events of the principality, but also the themes of dynastic legitimacy, religious pietas, economic prosperity and the universal order promoted by Rome.
This volume aims to offer an overview of most of Trajan's coinage, analysing its types, legends and iconography in the light of historical, epigraphic and archaeological sources. The work aims to highlight how coins, which were both a means of circulation and a political message, became under Trajan the means by which the emperor represented and consolidated the image of a just, expansive and universal power.
Through examination of the formal variety and artistic refinement of the coinage, a portrait of the emperor emerges that combines the virtus of a general with the wisdom of a legislator, making the coin a microcosm of the Empire itself: a vast, orderly and coherent world in which Rome recognises and asserts itself as the ruler of the known world.
