Son of Aelius, Lucius Verus, born in 130, was adopted at the same time as Marcus Aurelius by Antoninus at the express request of the dying Hadrian. During the reign of his adoptive father, he remained in the shadows and did not even receive the title of Caesar. After Antoninus' death, his half-brother immediately shared power with him, except for the titles of "Pontifex Maximus" (Grand Pontiff) and "Pater Patriæ" (Father of the Fatherland).
