The Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Calenberg was created following the division, in 1636, of the Duchy of Brunswick New Lüneburg. In 1648, following a new division, two new duchies were created, the Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Celle and the Duchy of Brunswick Lüneburg Calenberg. Georges I (03/28/1660 - 06/22/1727) was the great-grandson of Jacques I. He had been Elector of Hanover since 1698. He succeeded Anne, his aunt (1702 - 1714), the second daughter of James II, to the throne of England. He never learned English and left the management of affairs to the Whig party, with Stanhope (1717 - 1721) and Walpole (1721-1742). He died in Germany. His son, George II ascended the throne in 1727.
