This token, by its design, was certainly struck in Alsace. Marie-Louise is the daughter of Francis I, Emperor of Austria. Napoleon I, who had just triumphed at Wagram, had demanded her hand as a condition of peace with Austria. She was received enthusiastically in France, as this medal shows. Their marriage took place in Paris on April 2, 1810, and she gave birth to the King of Rome the following year. After the defeat of Napoleon I, she joined her father and remained in Schönbrunn, from where she liberally managed the duchies of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla, over which she had been given lifelong sovereignty.

CITY OF STRASBOURG

Strasbourg, at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, played a great economic, intellectual and artistic role. The cathedral, whose construction began in 1277, was completed at the end of the 15th century. Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, resided in Strasbourg from 1438 to 1447. The house of the Oeuvre Notre-Dame and the Kammerzell house were erected at this time. Strasbourg will find itself embroiled in the Wars of Religion which will devastate Alsace for more than a hundred years.
