The coins of the F series are reputed to example the Merovingian denarii of Auxerre. The legend of the prototypes is +AVDO MONET or +ADEONE MONET, and +AVTIZIODERO [CI]. These legends were copied, but certainly by illiterate engravers. These denarii could have been confused at the time with the coins of Auxerre. There are at least four variants for this sceat; our example corresponds to the ab types, with a small head and a field decorated with annulets around the cross (cf. Metcalf, vol. I, p. 129). The few examples from Cambridge have been analyzed; they contain on average 90.5% silver. The two from Oxford have respectively 91 and 95% silver. DM Metcalf specifies that no die study has been carried out for this F series

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
