Cette petite médaille fut frappée à l'occasion des fêtes pour la commémoration du vingt-cinquième anniversaire de règne de Léopold Ier le 21 juillet 1856 au type et format de la pièce de 40 francs. Celles-ci furent admises à la circulation par autorisation ministérielle. 449 pièces de 40 francs or furent frappées, mais en fait, la plus grande partie des 449 pièces en or fut retournée à la Banque nationale de Belgique où elles furent refondues. Il ne survit donc en fait qu'une très petite quantité de pièces pour l'un des millésimes et des types les plus rares de l'histoire monétaire de Belgique. Il existe des refrappes pour le modèle français (500 pièces) en général plus lourdes (16,80 g), parfois en frappe médaille. Les pièces de légende flamande en or sont toujours des refrappes.
This small medal was struck on the occasion of the celebrations commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of Leopold I on 21 July 1856 in the type and format of the 40 franc coin. These were admitted to circulation by ministerial authorization. 449 40 franc gold coins were struck, but in fact, the majority of the 449 gold coins were returned to the National Bank of Belgium where they were remelted. Therefore, only a very small quantity of coins survives for one of the rarest vintages and types in the monetary history of Belgium.
