Jean sans Peur (1371-1419), son of Philippe le Hardi and Marguerite de Flandre, succeeded his father in Burgundy in 1404, but only in 1405 in Flanders after the death of his mother. He married Margaret of Bavaria (1363-1423). He played a very important role at court and fell out with his cousin Louis d'Orléans, whom he allowed to be assassinated in 1407. The following twelve years were extremely complex.
