Token first distributed in 1763 as an attendance token for members of the Royal Society of Sciences. The island of Belle-Île belonged for a long time to the abbots of Quimperlé who ceded it to Marshal de Retz in the 16th century. Sold to Nicolas Fouquet in 1658, the superintendent built numerous fortifications there. Taken by the Dutch and then returned by the Treaty of Nijmegen, it was ceded to the crown by Marshal de Belle-Île, grandson of Fouquet, in 1718. Not far from its coast, the English won a victory in November 1759 and captured it in 1761. France recovered it in exchange for Minorca in 1763. Charles Louis Auguste Foucquet, Count then Duke of Belle-Isle was born on September 22, 1684 in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Grandson of Superintendent Nicolas Fouquet, he served brilliantly in the army (musketeer in 1701, captain in the Royal Cavalry regiment, field marshal, lieutenant general of the king's armies, etc.). . ) and diplomacy (attachment of Lorraine, governor of the city and citadel of Metz, ambassador to the election diet of the Empire). After the retreat from Prague in 1742, he was Marshal of France, then Duke and Peer and finally Minister of War from 1758 to 1761.. A member of the French Academy from 1749, he died in Paris on January 26, 1761.
