Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale, parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Portrait magnifique de haut relief avec tous les détails de la chevelure visibles. Revers fantastique, bien venu à la frappe de très haut relief. Jolie patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets mordorés, légèrement granuleuse au droit. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Magistrat Kléosthénès. Même coin de droit que l'exemplaire du cabinet des médailles de Paris (pl.CXL, n°25) et mêmes coins que l'exemplaire de la vente Giesener Münzhandlung 48 (1990), n° 440. Notre exemplaire est illustré dans The Hecatomnus Hoard, CH. IX, Londres 2002, p. 119, n° 32a, pl. 12.

CARIA - KNIDOS
(390-330 BC)
Knidos was a very old city, a great economic, political and cultural centre. In 476 BC it entered the Attico-Delian league and remained there until 412 BC, after the Athenian defeat in Sicily. The coinage of Cnidus seems to resume at the beginning of the 4th century. It was off Cnidus, in 394 BC, that the Athenian Conon, helped by the satrap Pharnabaze, won a great naval victory over the Spartan fleet of Lysander. Aphrodite, who was worshiped at Cnidus, is believed to have inspired Conon. Around 350 BC, Praxiteles executed at the request of the Cnidians a statue of Aphrodite which appears on the coinage until the Hellenistic period, more precisely until the battle of Magnesia in 189 BC..
