Ce denier est frappé sur un flan large et légèrement voilé. De petites faiblesses de frappe sont à noter mais un très bel exemplaire avec de beaux reliefs dans l’ensemble

CHARLES II LE CHAUVE / THE BALD

(20/06/840-6/10/877)

Charles the Bald became king on the death of his father, Louis the Pious, on June 20, 840. At the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Carolingian empire was shared between Louis' three sons. Lothair receives Lotharingia, Louis the German, Francia Orientalis and Charles Francia Occidentalis. The type with the Christian legend predates 864 and the reform of the Edict of Pîtres, but it must be later than 843. It may have been struck between 850 and 860.
