Claude Bourgelat, né à Lyon le 11 novembre 1712, mort le 3 janvier 1779, est un écuyer et savant français. Bourgelat est le créateur des écoles vétérinaires dont il a fondé la première du genre à Lyon en 1761, puis à Alfort. On peut le regarder comme le fondateur de l’hippiatrique en France.

Cette école fut créée au printemps 1765, quatre années après celle de Lyon. C'est Claude Bourgelat avocat et écuyer tenant l'Académie d'équitation de Lyon, qui sollicita Henri Léonard Jean Baptiste Bertin, ex-intendant de la généralité de Lyon, contrôleur général des finances de Louis XV, en mars 1764 pour déplacer l'école, de Lyon à Paris. Ceci fut refusé par Bertin qui signala par un courrier de mars 1765 la volonté du roi de créer une école dans chaque intendance et de débuter par Paris.
D'abord installée au nord de Paris, paroisse de La Chapelle (en l'actuelle rue Philippe-de-Girard, 10e arrondissement), l'école se révéla dotée de locaux trop exigus. De plus l'environnement semblait mettre en péril la « bonne moralité » des étudiants. La propriété du château d'Alfort, achetée au baron de Bormes, correspondit mieux à un enseignement rural par son emplacement et la surface de ses terrains. L'acte de vente fut signé le 27 décembre 1765 et l'enseignement y commença en octobre 1766..

This school was created in the spring of 1765, four years after that of Lyon. This was refused by Bertin who signalled by a letter of March 1765 the king's desire to create a school in each intendancy and to start with Paris.
First established in the north of Paris, in the parish of La Chapelle (on what is now rue Philippe-de-Girard, 10th arrondissement), the school proved to have premises that were too small.. Moreover, the environment seemed to jeopardize the \\\"good morality\\\" of the students.. The property of the Château d'Alfort, purchased from Baron de Bormes, was better suited to rural education due to its location and the size of its land.. The deed of sale was signed on December 27, 1765 and teaching began there in October 1766..
