According to a long hagiographic tradition, notably reported by Jacques de Voragine in the Golden Legend, Lucy was born in Syracuse towards the end of the 3rd century, into a wealthy patrician family. However, she turned away from marriage and worldly goods and decided to dedicate her virginity to God, following the example of Saint Agatha, a venerated virgin and martyr from another Sicilian city, Catania. A rejected suitor denounced her as a Christian to the local Roman authorities, who condemned her to be locked up in a brothel and reduced to debauchery. According to legend, this order was thwarted by divine intervention: the Holy Spirit turned Lucy's body completely petrified, and no one was able to transport her. The young woman was then condemned to the stake, but the flames did not devour her. She was finally pierced through the neck with a sword and died a martyr in 304 in Syracuse.
