Lorsque la ville d'Évreux décide de se doter d'un lycée impérial, en 1853, elle offre déjà aux garçons la possibilité de suivre des études secondaires au sein de son collège communal depuis des décennies. La conversion de ce collège en lycée est acceptée par décret impérial de Napoléon III le 1er septembre 1854. Mais les travaux alors engagés par la ville pour la construction du chemin du fer « absorbe complètement tous les matériaux que l'industrie peut produire et occupe tous les bras disponibles ». Cet immense chantier va retarder l'édification des locaux nécessaires à l’accueil de tous les nouveaux élèves espérés au lycée.
La première pierre est enfin posée le 14 octobre 1857 et le lycée impérial peut ouvrir pour la rentrée du 1er octobre 1859. Pendant près d'un siècle, il traverse tous les aléas de l'Histoire et reçoit des jeunes garçons de tout le département. Il sera d’ailleurs longtemps le seul lycée de l’Eure.

Dimensions: 51*44 mm When the city of Évreux decided to build an imperial high school in 1853, it had already been offering boys the opportunity to pursue secondary studies at its municipal college for decades. The conversion of this college into a high school was accepted by imperial decree of Napoleon III on September 1, 1854. But the work then undertaken by the city for the construction of the railway \\\"completely absorbed all the materials that industry could produce and occupied all available hands.\\\" This immense construction site would delay the construction of the premises necessary to accommodate all the new students expected at the high school. The first stone was finally laid on October 14, 1857, and the imperial high school could open for the start of the school year on October 1, 1859. For nearly a century, it survived all the ups and downs of history and received young boys from all over the department.
