Ptolemy IX, born in 141 BC, is the eldest son of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes (145-116 BC) and Cleopatra III. He succeeded his father in 116 BC. He appointed his younger brother, Ptolemy X Alexander I, governor of Cyprus in 113 BC. In 106 BC, he was overthrown by his brother and took his place in Cyprus. Ptolemy X reigned with his mother until her death. Finally after a reign of eighteen years, he was driven out by the Alexandrians and murdered at sea in 88 BC.
