Il réussit à battre le président sortant Grover Cleveland en remportant la majorité des grands électeurs tout en obtenant moins de voix que Cleveland. Ce dernier est en effet défait sur ses propres terres électorales, les démocrates new-yorkais du Tammany Hall étant hostiles à Cleveland.
