This coin commemorates the centennial of the Statue of Liberty, which was unveiled on October 28, 1886, in the presence of U.S. President Grover Cleveland. For many immigrants arriving in New York after the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean by boat, it was a symbol of freedom and a new life. From 1892 to 1954, new immigrants first passed through Ellis Island.
