Selon Marc Labouret, il s’agit d’un jeton frappé à l’occasion de la fondation du Contrat Social en 1776. La loge a été fondée le 10 mars 1766 sous le titre distinctif de Saint-Lazare. Reconstituée par le Grand Orient en janvier 1774. Elle avait obtenu en 1770 des constitutions de la Mère Loge de Marseille et pris le titre de Saint-Jean d’Ecosse du Contrat Social que le Grand Orient reconnut en mai 1776. Le 6 mai de la même année, elle prit le titre de Mère Loge Ecossaise de France à la suite de l’incorporation dans son sein de la Mère Loge d’Avignon qui lui transmit son rite philosophique. Elle vota les Rêglements Généraux de la Maçonnerie Ecossaise. Mais Le Grand Orient de France n’accepta pas ses prétentions et un conflit éclata jusqu’en 1781. Par la suite Le Contrat Social renonça à son titre de Mère Loge auprès du Grand Orient de France tout en se gardant le droit de l’utiliser dans ses propres relations avec les 18 loges issues du Contrat Social.
