Said Charles V Charles V was born in Ghent February 25, 1500 to the union of the Archduke Philip the Handsome and Joanna the Mad. Father's side, he was the grand-son of Maximilian I of Habsburg and the maternal side, grand-son of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. He became ruler of the Netherlands to the death of his father in 1506, when he was only 6 years.
