BRITISH INDIA - EAST INDIA COMPANY - BENGAL - SHAH ALAM II

(AH 1174-1202 and 1203-1221 or (1759-1788 and 1789-1806)

Having been treated by the English surgeon Hamilton, the Emperor Farrukhsiyar concedes, in 1717, to his compatriots important commercial advantages. In 1764, Mughal Shah Alam II granted diwani (commercial income) from Bengal, Bihar and Orissa to the English East India Company against payment of 3,200,000 rupees per year. In 1769, the English restrict the rights of the Bengali to market certain products, the same year and the following, a terrible famine kills 10 million people, that is to say a third of the population. From this period, the history of Bengal merges with that of the British administration and its governors-general (1773-1833).
