The Sienese Enea Silvio Piccolomini participates in the Council of Basel. After the departure of Pope Eugene IV, he became secretary to Antipope Felix V. In 1442, he became secretary to Emperor Frederick III. In 1445, he joined Eugene IV and in 1446 became his apostolic secretary. Appointed priest then bishop in 1447, he became non in Austria in 1450 by Pope Nicolas V. Under his pontificate, he condemned conciliarism and declared war on the Ottoman Empire.
