The history of Marche County is complex. The county of Basse Marche had been under English domination since 1177. In 1203, at the request of Philippe Auguste, Eleanor of Aquitaine restored the county to Hugues IX (1199-1204-1208). His son Hugues X de Lusignan succeeded him in 1208. He married in 1220, the widow of King Jean-sans-Terre (+1216), Isabelle d'Angoulême. He thus became Count of Angoulême.
