Par divers accords de 1955 à 1959, la Sarre fut rendue à l'Allemagne concurremment au rapprochement franco-allemand.

The region developed mainly after 1871 with the exploitation of coal mines. In 1945, the Saarland was included in the French occupation zone and provided with a government in 1947. Through various agreements from 1955 to 1959, the Saarland was returned to Germany concurrently with the Franco-German rapprochement.
