A rare coin despite its high production figures. A buffer zone between France and Germany, the Saarland was fortified by Louis XIV and formed a French department between 1795 and 1814 before returning to Prussia and then to the Reich. The region developed mainly after 1871 with the exploitation of coal mines. In 1945, the Saarland was included in the French occupation zone and provided with a government in 1947. Through various agreements from 1955 to 1959, the Saarland was returned to Germany concurrently with the Franco-German rapprochement.
