560 lots are on offer at the CGB Numismatique Paris Live Auction – 12 December 2017, from ancient coins, French royal and modern coins to world coins, jetons and medals.

The sale starts with a very nice set of ancient coins that includes more than 50 Greek coins, among which a beautiful Philip III of Macedon tetradrachm (lot 453323) and an exquisite Perseus tetradrachm (lot 457789). Then there is a fine selection of Roman coins. It includes among other things an interesting assortment of aurei, including a Hadrian aureus (lot 457152) and a rare Cneius Domitius Ahenobarbus denarius from the Robert Couet collection. As with our last auctions, we have focused on coins with a pedigree (private collection, sales catalog, declared and sometimes published treasure troves, etc.).
About ten Celtic coins complete this ancient coins portion. Two exceptional coins are offered, i.e. a Danube Celts “Bartkranzaverse” type of tetradrachm (lot 458513) and a superb category I Remi stater à l’oeil (with an eye) (lot 458805).

A top-quality selection of Merovingian and Carolingian coins is also offered, including an extremely rare Senlis Triens à la croix ancrée (with an anchor cross) (lot 457456), a previously unseen Pepin the Short denarius (lot 455499) or a splendid denier au portrait (with a portrait) that may be from the reign of Charles the Simple (898-923), of Robert (922-923) or from the early reign of Rudolph (923-936) (lot 456431).

With more than 150 lots, the royal coins portion of this auction sale is one of its major parts. It includes extremely rare items such as a John II the Good demi-gros à la couronne (with a crown) (lot 453239), a trial coin of the Louis XIV 1658 A (minted in Paris) 30-denier coin (lot 459362) or the trial coin of the Louis XIV 1657 K (minted in Bordeaux) six blancs coin (30-deniers tournois coin) (lot 459539). The classics such as the gold écu au soleil (with sun), the mouton d'or (golden sheep) coin, or the écus à la cravate (with a necktie) will of course be part of the sale.

With no less than 40 lots offered for sale, the feudal coins portion is also rich and extensive: a Louis Male écu d'or au Lion (with a lion) for the County of Flanders (lot 457154), a very nice Raymond IV Franc à pied (monarch standing) for the principality of Orange (lot 446595) and a John I plaque for the Duchy of Lorraine, which is missing from most collections (lot 437121).

Then there are French modern coins (from the post French Revolution period). Among the 118 lots offered for sale, 29 were certified and graded by PCGS and NGC, including lot 452368, a pre-series without the word “ESSAI” for the one-centime Épi matte proof PCGS SP67, which is hardly ever offered for sale. Outside the traditional gold 40 Francs or 100 Francs, the most remarkable lots of this portion of the sale are the Napoléon Empereur, Calendrier révolutionnaire 5-Francs, 1805 K (minted in Bordeaux) (lot 453525), a particularly rare coin that we are selling for the very first time. This coin is also the first one of this type to be included in the Collection Idéale. Another exceptional coin (lot 458214) is the Louis XVIII 5-Francs tête nue (hatless) presentation coin from 1815, without a horse head under the signature. It has a prestigious pedigree as it is from the private collection of engraver Auguste-Francois Michaut’s descendants!

The auction continues with a selection of particularly specialized and sought-after world coins. The collection of Dr. Frédéric Nordmann accounts for almost half of them. Coins such as the Ernest-Louis de Hesse Darmstadt Carolin or 10 Gulden (lot 457046) or a very nice George III of England Guinea 4th bust (lot 457256) stand out from the other coins from this reference collection.
Other outstanding lots of this sale include an Alfonso VIII Maravedi for Castile (lot 448133), an impressive Joseph Napoléon 5-Pesetas coin, Madrid, from 1813 (lot 455363) and a beautiful Alexander II Poltina (lot 429999). Finally, a rarely-seen Vatican 1868 100-Lira coin with the effigy of Pope Pius IX, only 440 copies of which were struck (lot 453029).

A series of jetons ends the sale.
