LOUIS PHILIPPE JOSEPH, DUKE OF ORLEANS, said PHILIPPE-EQUALITY

(1747-1793)

Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke of Orleans, said Philippe Egalite was born in Saint-Cloud April 13, 1747. He brought successively titles of Duke of Montpensier then Duke of Chartres and finally Duke of Orleans. Extremely rich, nurtured political ambitions, open to new ideas, he was eager to play a role as he became the bitter enemy of Marie Antoinette. Member of the nobility to the States General in 1789, he was one of the first to meet the third condition. it certainly caressed the dream of the throne or become regent. Demagogue, he thought take a chance after the flight to Varennes and became a member of the Paris Convention. He then took the name of Philippe Egalite and did not hesitate to vote for the death of his cousin Louis XVI. Become suspect, he was arrested in April 1793 and sentenced to the guillotine. He is the father of Louis-Philippe who brought after him the title of Duke of Orleans to his accession to the throne in 1830.
