LOUIS XVI

(10/05/1774-21/01/1793)

In 1789, events will accelerate and cause the fall of the monarchy. If May 5, King opened the meeting of the States General to 1,200 members (doubling of the third), followed by stagnation debates, proclaims in the Third National Assembly with some members of the other two orders, the nobility and the clergy. On June 20, the Oath of the Tennis Court of Versailles. On June 23, the King wants to suspend the proceedings (intervention Mirabeau: "We are here by the will of the people, we do not go out except by force of bayonets"). The National Constituent Assembly is formed by three orders on July 9. King returns Necker on July 11, but remember after taking of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Bailly was the first mayor of Paris, appointed July 15. Following the Great Fear that spreads in the countryside, in the night of 4 August, is the abolition of feudal rights and privileges. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was passed August 26, 1789.
