Louis de Bourbon, comte de Vermandois, né le 2 octobre 1667, fut un prince français légitimé en 1669, mort en 1683.
Né alors que sa mère connaissait un début de disgrâce, il est le premier des fils naturels de Louis XIV que le roi eut de sa favorite "officielle" la duchesse Louise de La Vallière et ne fut légitimé que deux ans après sa naissance. Deux autres fils étaient nés et morts avant que Mademoiselle de La Vallière ne soit déclarée ouvertement maîtresse royale.
Il était très proche de sa sœur Marie Anne de Bourbon.
Il reçut le titre d'Amiral de France, alors qu'il n'est âgé que de deux ans, ce qui permet au roi de garder la maîtrise de la marine pendant de nombreuses années.
Lorsque sa mère entre chez les carmélites afin d'expier ses fautes, elle confie ses enfants à la belle-sœur du roi, la princesse palatine, duchesse d'Orléans (1674).
Quelque temps plus tard, la duchesse d'Orléans ayant amené le petit comte de Vermandois et sa sœur visiter leur mère en son couvent, celle-ci, toute à ses pénitences, refusa d'embrasser son fils qui voulait se jeter dans ses bras.
Jeune adolescent solitaire, il fut séduit et initié à l'homosexualité par le chevalier de Lorraine, favori de Monsieur, frère du roi, le duc d'Orléans, qui voulait en faire un "parapluie" au cas où le roi eût songé à le disgracier. Effectivement, les erreurs de jeunesse du comte de Vermandois suscitèrent contre lui la colère du roi, Louis XIV (qui ne tolérait que par politique les débauches de son frère). Le jeune amiral fut condamné à se retirer de la cour (1682).
L'année suivante, la Duchesse d'Orléans obtint pour son pupille, de la part du roi, qu'il puisse combattre en Flandres afin de racheter ses erreurs et tenter de rentrer en grâce. Bien que se dépensant sans compter, il n'eut que peu d'estime de la part du roi, son père, qui fut très peu affecté par sa mort, au contraire de sa sœur et la Princesse Palatine, qui le pleurèrent beaucoup.
Louis de Bourbon mourut le 18 novembre 1683 en Flandres à la suite d'une maladie contractée durant le siège de Courtrai mené par Vauban. Il fut enterré à la cathédrale d'Arras.
