Persian prince Orontes, originally from Bactria, is of royal blood, son of Artasyras. He is the husband of Rhodogune, daughter of Artaxerxes II Memnon (404-359 BC). At the time of the battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC between Artaxerxes II and Cyrus the Younger, he was satrap of Armenia. He is charged with Tissapherne to pursue the Ten Thousand of Xenophon. He participated with Tiribaze in the expedition against Evagoras II of Salamis (386-381 BC). Disgraced, he found favor with the new Achaemenid monarch Artaxerxes III (359-338 BC). Satrap of Mysia since 362 or of Dascylion, he was the instigator of the great revolt of the satraps against the authority of the king of kings, Artaxerxes II, which led to the fall of the latter. He died in 344 BC.
