NICEPHORUS I and STAURACIUS

(12/803-25/07/811)

Irene was overthrown in 802 by a palace plot and Nicephorus I became emperor. His son Stauracius, who had married Theophano, was appointed co-emperor in 803. Stauracius, himself seriously wounded, managed to escape and reach Constantinople. He abdicated on October 2, 811 in favor of his brother-in-law Michael I and retired to a monastery where he died early the following year..
