A propos de l’histoire des géants : En 1480, les échevins de Douai décidèrent de célébrer le succès des Douaisiens sur les soldats du roi de France Louis XI l'année précédente. Cette procession en l'honneur de saint Maurand, patron de Douai, avait lieu le 16 juin. La manifestation prit de plus en plus d'ampleur et, en 1530, Gayant ("géant " en patois picard) y fit sa première apparition ; son corps avait été fabriqué en osier par la corporation des manneliers (fabricants de paniers d'osier). L'année suivante, la corporation des fruitiers fit construire une géante, Mme Gayant. En 1720 naquirent leurs enfants, Jacquot, Fillon et Binbin (une fille et deux garçons). En 1770, l'évêque d'Arras interdit cette procession, quand il s'aperçut que la ville célébrait toujours la défaite des Français, le 16 juin 1479, alors qu'elle était française depuis plus d'un siècle. Il en institua une nouvelle qui se tiendrait désormais le 5 juillet (ou le dimanche qui suit cette date), jour anniversaire de l'entrée des Français à Douai en 1667.

This procession in honor of Saint Maurand, patron saint of Douai, took place on June 16. The event grew in size and, in 1530, Gayant (\\\"giant\\\" in Picard dialect) made his first appearance there; his body had been made of wicker by the guild of manneliers (makers of wicker baskets). The following year, the guild of fruit growers had a giantess built, Mrs. Gayant. In 1720, their children, Jacquot, Fillon and Binbin (a girl and two boys), were born. In 1770, the Bishop of Arras banned this procession when he noticed that the city was still celebrating the defeat of the French on June 16, 1479, even though it had been French for over a century.
