ORANGE - PRINCIPALITY OF ORANGE - JOHN II OF CHALON

(1475-1502)

The house of Chalon had succeeded the house of Baux in the principality of Orange with Jean I of Chalon, husband of Marie des Baux. Jean II de Chalon succeeded Guillaume (1462-1475) but this prince attracted the wrath of Louis XI by plotting with the Princes and the Duke of Burgundy. In revenge, the king dispossessed Louis II of Chalon and gave the principality to Philippe de Hochberg (1478-1482). Louis recovered his domain after the death of the King in the settlement of the affairs of Provence and paid homage to Charles VIII. Philibert (1502-1530) was the last prince of the house of Chalon. Orange passed through the house of Nassau with René (1530-1544).
