Son of Guillaume de Nassau, Maurice de Nassau was born in Dillenburg in 1567. On the death of his father, aged only seventeen, he was appointed stadtholder of Holland and Zeeland, then, in 1587, captain general of the armies of land and sea of the United Provinces. It was with the support of King Henry IV of France that he took the places of Breda (1591), Nijmegen (1592) and all those on the right bank of the Rhine from the Spaniards.
