PALESTINE
(4th century BC)
The number of imitations for the coinage of Athens is considerable. Many examples were discovered at Naucratis in the Nile Valley. This type of drachmas seems to come from Palestinian workshops, maybe Gaza? At first, the imitations are menial and of good weight. Gradually, the weight of the coins lowers and the style becomes coarser. The next step is the modification for all or part of the typology and the alteration or disappearance of the legend and its replacement by Aramaic letters.
