L’hôtel de ville de Paris, construit au XVIe siècle et richement embelli ensuite fut détruit par un incendie déclenché par des pétroleurs durant la Commune en 1871. Non seulement le palais fut détruit mais archives et bibliothèque finirent en cendres. Les deux collections de l'état civil parisien antérieur à 1860 (de la ville et du greffe) sont à jamais perdues, la première dans l'incendie de l'Hôtel de ville et la seconde dans celui du Palais de Justice. Le bâtiment est reconstruit entre 1874 et 1882 sur les plans des architectes Théodore Ballu et Édouard Deperthes. La façade, de style néorenaissance, s'inspire largement de celle du bâtiment disparu. The Paris City Hall, built in the 16th century and subsequently lavishly embellished, was destroyed by a fire started by oilmen during the Commune in 1871. Not only was the palace destroyed, but the archives and library ended up in ashes. The two collections of Parisian civil status records prior to 1860 (from the city and the registry) were forever lost, the first in the fire at the City Hall and the second in the fire at the Palais de Justice. The building was rebuilt between 1874 and 1882 based on plans by architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes. The neo-Renaissance façade is largely inspired by that of the missing building.
