Il fut élu député de la Seine sous la Ire Assemblée nationale constituante du Gouvernement provisoire de la République française (21 octobre 1945-10 juin 1946) puis fut réélu sans discontinuité jusqu’à la IIIe législature de la IVe République (2 janvier 1956-13 mai 1958). Résistant français, il fut notamment ministre du Travail et de la Sécurité sociale de 1946 à 1949 et président du Conseil constitutionnel entre 1983 et 1986, remplacé par Robert Badinter. Il présida la Ligue des droits de l’homme de 1958 à 1975, puis la Fédération internationale des ligues des droits de l’homme de 1977 à 1983. Il fit don de son corps à la science.

He was elected as a member of parliament for the Seine under the First National Constituent Assembly of the Provisional Government of the French Republic (October 21, 1945-June 10, 1946) and was then re-elected without interruption until the Third Legislature of the Fourth Republic (January 2, 1956-May 13, 1958). A French Resistance member, he was notably Minister of Labor and Social Security from 1946 to 1949 and President of the Constitutional Council between 1983 and 1986, replaced by Robert Badinter. He chaired the Human Rights League from 1958 to 1975, then the International Federation for Human Rights from 1977 to 1983. He donated his body to science.
