Membre du Parti social-démocrate d'Allemagne (SPD), il est le premier président du Reich de la république de Weimar après l'abdication de l'empereur Guillaume II en 1918
.

A member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), he was the first Reich President of the Weimar Republic after the abdication of Emperor Wilhelm II in 1918.
