RHODES - GRANDS MAÎTRES DE L'ORDRE DE L'HÔPITAL ET DE SAINT-JEAN DE JÉRUSALEM - RAYMOND BÉRENGER
(1365-10/1374)
Raymond Bérenger succeeded Roger de Pins. As early as 1365, Raymond attacked Alexandria alongside Peter I of Cyprus. Alexandria was an important center for Arab civilization and served as a refuge for the Muslim fleet and Turkish pirates. The city was besieged by one hundred Latin ships but the besieged did not surrender. Alexandria eventually fell and the city was sacked, the ramparts dismantled and enemy ships burned in the harbor. As the place could not be held, the town was abandoned. Raymond Bérenger died in Rhodes in November 1374. The Grand Master Robert de Juilly succeeded him.
