KINGDOM OF ENGLAND - CNUT
(1016-1035)
Cnut (995-1016-1035) was king of England, Denmark and Norway. Succeeding Æthelred in 1016, he united under the Viking yoke all the Anglo-Saxon principalities of England. Cnut was a great legislator and collected the laws in the form of the Danish Law. He traveled in Europe and came to Rome in 1027. He had married Emma of Normandy. When he died in 1035, his sons, Harold (1035-1040) and Harthacnut (1040-1042), could not maintain themselves in England and the great Nordic empire broke up. Edward the Confessor (1004-1042-1066), of the House of Wessex, restored Anglo-Saxon power over England.
