Enna was a colony of Syracuse founded in 664 BC on a solid acropolis, famous for its temple of Demeter. Governed by a tyrant, Dionysius the Elder seized the city in 386 BC but had to abandon it before the advance of the Carthaginian general Himilcon. Nevertheless, Enna came under the influence of Syracuse, certainly dominated by Agathokles until the arrival in 309 of the Akragantian general Xenodikos. But two years later, the city fell back under the control of the Syracusan. After the latter's death, Enna fell into the hands of Phintias of Agrigento (287-279 BC). The inhabitants requested and obtained the support of the Carthaginians before falling in 259 BC into the hands of the Romans. During the Second Punic War, the city was destroyed in 214 BC and then repopulated.
