Le premier système décimal est introduit par la loi royale du 15 avril 1848. Les premières monnaies frappées sont datées de 1850.
Les équivalences sont les suivantes :
- 10 Décimos de Real = 1 Real
- 100 Céntimos de Real = 1 Real
Ce système dura peu de temps puisqu’il fut remplacé en 1864 par un second système décimal en vue d’une association à l’Union Monétaire Latine.
