La région se développa surtout après 1871 avec l'exploitation des mines de charbon. En 1945, la Sarre fut comprise dans la zone d'occupation française et pourvue en 1947 d'un gouvernement. Par divers accords de 1955 à 1959, la Sarre fut rendue à l'Allemagne concurremment au rapprochement franco-allemand.

The region developed especially after 1871 with the exploitation of coal mines. In 1945, the Saar was included in the French occupation zone and provided in 1947 with a government.
