TOURAINE - GENTRY AND TOWNS

Region of the Turones Celts, Touraine has as main city Turones or Caesarodunum (Tours) under the Romans, of which it is the capital of Lyonnaise IIIe. After the Battle of Vouillé in 507, it passed to the Franks. It became county in the 10th century and the stake of a rivalry between the houses of Anjou and Blois. The city of Tours was one of the favorite residences of Charles VII and Louis XI. In 1870, it hosted the delegation of the National Defense government before being taken by the Bavarians in 1871..
