Ce denier est frappé sur un flan assez large et très légèrement irrégulier laissant apparaître l’essentiel des grènetis extérieurs. Exemplaire recouvert d’une légère patine grise. La croix du revers apparaît légèrement en négatif au droit

TOURAINE - TOURS - ABBEY OF SAINT-MARTIN DE TOURS

(11th century)

The abbey of Saint-Martin was founded around 590. Feudal coinage began there at the end of the 10th century with the head of Saint-Martin as the monetary type. The count of Maine and Anjou, Henri Plantagenêt, seems to have been a lay abbot of Saint-Martin. Taking the pretext of the assassination of Arthur of Brittany in 1203, Philippe Auguste proclaimed in 1204 the clerk of all the possessions of Jean-sans-Terre, the assassin of the young Arthur, including Saint-Martin de Tours.
