VATICAN - BENEDICT XV (Giacomo Dalla Chiesa)

Successor of Pius X, Giacomo Dalla Chiesa was elected pope under the name of Benedict XV on September 3, 1914. His pontificate coincided with the First World War during which he showed intense diplomatic activity. It is also marked by the promulgation of the new Code of Canon Law, an important step in the centralization of papal power. He died on January 22, 1922.
